Geelong/Rivergum Show Results 2008

With much excitement we arrived at the Geelong Show. After not enough passes being sent and a
change of venue all was go go go!!  As Daddy Christmas would say ho ho ho!!!!

On arrival Julie, Ian and I were greeted by 5 very dejected faces. Why you may ask. The International
Harvester Pavilion, (yes it sounds good), was nothing but a dirty, dark tin shed, completely tucked
out of view of the general; public and, yes it gets worse, right under the drop ride and next to the generators
for the rides. All that we asked for was a clean, bright and quiet place away from the rides!!!!
This was the answer.

Nine of us marched off to the Admin Building to find out why. To cut a long and painful story short
Jim, a very helpful man, found us s new location between some horses and a blacksmith. It was under
cover opposite the oval so we thought we were set. All was fine until the wind started and little willy willies
formed outside our area covering us and the poor ratties in dust and pollen. Then the horses started
galloping around the oval. That was it. The ratties hammocks were covered in dust so at 3pm we packed
up and left. Thankfully all the Saturday judging was over before it became unbearable.

 What to do about Sunday?

As we were expecting many more members on Sunday and not wanting to go back to the show
grounds what should we do? It would have been more unbearable on Sunday as it was the day for
the tractor pull. Dust, dust and noise. The park opposite the Holiday Park did not offer enough shade.
So we asked the owners of the Holiday Park if they could suggest a suitable spot to hold our show. Yes
they DO know that we have rats staying with us!!!!

They offered the BBQ area at the back of the park. It was perfect. Lovely green grass, shady trees,
a BBQ and NO DUST.  A call to Dana to let everyone know about the change of venue, Debbie E.
contacted a number of people and it was all settled.

Saturday night we went to the local shopping centre and bought take away and salads
etc for the BBQ Sunday. A lovely peaceful night and a few well earned drinks. Anne C. was tipsy
on a bottle of Sarsparella!!!!! Debbie E. entertained all the younger set in her cabin and I
don’t think she got much sleep. It was great to have new members Leoni and Candy with us
and brave Prue C. stayed the night with Anne C. and Glenys M. Glenys couldn’t quite
make it to the top bunk, I think it must have been the result of the bubbles in the soft drink she had.

It was great on Sunday to only have to walk a few meters to our showing spot. Members bought tables and
we set up the rats. Our beautiful new banner was tied between two trees and we were set.
A big thank you to Jackie D. who donated rolls, bread and salad and Leoni who donated some of
the meat. We all had an absolute ball in the shade and the rats were very contented.

A big thank you to the Riverglen Holiday Park for their generosity and acceptance of our pets.

Mostly though, a HUGE thanks you to all of our wonderful members for making it such a memorable
weekend and for the help and good humour in adverse conditions.
