Million Paws Walk 2008

Eleven members said they would do the walk but only five turned up. In fairness though, the
weather the day before was a little on the “putting you off going” side. In actual fact we had fine weather
with the last shower just before the walk started and then remaining cool but fine. There were a huge
number of entries with dogs of all shapes and sizes. Everyone was friendly and the dogs got on really
well too. I didn’t see one raised hackle the whole day.

The RSPCA was trying to break the Guiness World Record for 10,000 dogs at one event. RSPCA
volunteers were asking entrants to sign a form so the number of entries could be counted. Each
signature represented one dog which I thought was silly because so many people had more than one
dog and I am sure there would have been more that 10,000 dogs on the day. Bad luck Doctor Hugh.

Glenys and Melissa were the only brave members to bring ratties. Rebecca’s and mine were there in
spirit but we left them home where it was warm and dry, lucky little darlings!!!!!!! I did take Remy and Emile
as stand ins. Yes they are stuffed but they behaved impeccably all day.

Shortly after the walk began our little band became separated with Melissa, Rebecca and Joseph
bringing up the rear. Glenys was carrying her pet shuttle, in case her boys became a little unsettled,
and every now and then a dog would come along and sniff at it. The owners would look in
and see nothing. Nashville and Tupelo were travelling in style in her parka hood. One
would stick his head out and there were “OH! aren’t they cute” with Glenys commenting, how we
were doing all the work and they were getting all the glory.

We all caught up just the near the end because my OLD hips were so sore I could only manage
a slow shuffle. I couldn’t even make it up a large step without assistance. I was determined to go
through to the finish line. As we approached a voice was heard to say, over a loud speaker,
“and here comes Glenys with her rats.” She is famous where ever she goes. Of course it was
one her RSPCA associates and yes we had to stop for the photo shot and rattie cuddles. People
stopped to look and comment (favourably) so we did get our 15 seconds of fame. Glenys, Rebecca
and I went back to my car and sat and chatted, drinking very welcome hot coffee and eating
delicious caramel apple cake. Rebecca had the front seat, Glenys had the back seat and I had
the back with the tail gate up. We sat with our legs stretched out and after a good while decided it
was time to move and head off home.

Thanks to Melissa and Joseph for coming along.
